Gendry would be around for the material covered by this season regardless. Edric shuffles offstage around the same time Gendry does, so somehow making it so Gendry winds up with Stannis (a separate, equally unlikely issue) and fills the Edric role wouldn’t solve the problem of keeping Joe Dempsie around — he’d be gone by the same point either way.
