pluralharris asked: Was thinking about my aCoK re-read today and to me it seemed as though the Frey's and Bolton were ready to betray Robb even before his marriage. In the Arya chapters with Bolton it seems the Frey's were pretty dispirited after Stannis was defeated in KL and we know the Late Lord Frey is always one to side with the winners. Thus do you think Robb's breaking of the betrothal was just the excuse Frey and Co needed or do you attribute Robb's downfall mainly to his mistakes/ teenage fuck frenzy?
I’m sure they were dispirited, but so was Robb. Perhaps Lord Walder — and Roose Bolton, who’s always a cool customer — was looking for a pretext to abandon Robb and throw in with the Lannisters, but as long as Robb and his forces kept winning battles without directly insulting the Freys in the process, Walder’s allegiance was unlikely to change. And the one thing Robb and his forces were good at was winning battles — to a fault, in Edmure’s case.
