Nobody Suspects the Butterfly just reminded me that Roose says he thought Robb had lost the war the moment he heard Theon had sacked Winterfell, which certainly opens up the possibility that he ordered Ramsay to re-sack it on a plausibly deniable basis. After all, the word that got out was that the Ironmen burned it in the battle, not that Ramsay slaughtered the non-Bolton northmen and Ironborn alike and then put the place to the torch. Of course, that also means he could’ve called an audible and done that all on his own without worrying about what daddy dearest would think. Roose in turn seems not exactly heartbroken about it when we see him and Ramsay discussing it in ADWD, though whether that’s because he supported that course of action all along or because there’s no use crying over spilt milk is anybody’s guess.
