We’ll start at the beginning of Renly’s development, where he had to go through a siege and eat rats because Stannis refused to surrender his family’s home to the Lords of the Reach. Does that explain his later love for opulence, why he refuses to take tourneys seriously? Absolutely. Renly spent a year next to death, where cannibalism was being seriously considered, at the age of seven. So no, the big guy riding towards him with a stick to knock him on his ass isn’t really that frightening.
